Auto Insurance Claims: Insuring an undriven car, time home owners, comprehensive insurance

Question
My mother-in-law has not driven her car in the past 2-3 years and is not ready to sell it although she has no future plans to drive.  We were wondering if she needs to have any type of  auto insurance or would her house insurance cover any type of damage to the car while parked in her attached garage?

Answer
Hello,

In order to protect the car against fire and theft, you need comprehensive insurance on the auto policy.

The homeowner's will not pick up any damage to the car. The only time home owners is in play for the car is if you have personal items stolen from the car.

You need comp insurance added to the auto policy.
