Auto Insurance Claims: out of state claim, travel expenses on claim

Question
A friend was visiting OK from AZ and was in an auto accident, other party fully at fault.  Their insurance company is paying for the repairs, but is refusing to pay to have the car shipped back to AZ (it took a month to get repairs).  They have been paying for a rental car.  My friend is going to have to take a week of vacation time from work to go get her car back.  Shouldn't the insurance company pay for airfare to OK or for hotels or something?

Answer
Joe,

In my opinion, the insurance company is responsible for reasonable costs incurred directly because of their driver's negligence.  I would be happy to personally consult on the matter, but I would have many questions.

1.  Shipped back?  Does it not drive?
2.  How many miles is it from your friend's house to where the car is located?

What normally happens is that one retains receipts for all of the costs incurred, then presents them for reimbursement.  The adjuster should pay all reasonable costs that are a direct result of the accident.  I know that is vague, but that is how it works.  A good question to ask is this:

If you knew there was no insurance coverage, how would you handle it in the most cost effective manner?

If your friend handles it that way, she should get reimbursed most of the expenses.  Information is always free at Petty Details, LLC!
