Auto Insurance Claims: totaled vehicles value, comparable vehicle, comparable vehicles

Question
My wife was rearended by a semi and our pickup was totaled.  The amount offered to us by their insurance will not cover replacement of our truck. Do I have the option of refusing their  dollar offer  and requesting a comparable vehicle be purchased by their insurance company to replace our truck?  Thankyou

Answer
Unfortunately the simple answer is no.  They are obligated to pay you the fair "actual cash value" of your vehicle before it was damaged.  This is the amount you could have sold it for on the open market, considering age, mileage, options, condition, etc.  You should check online sources like NADA, Kelly BB, Edmunds, etc to get an ideas to value range.  Also check the classifieds for comparable vehicles, but keep in mind vehicles often sell for less than list price.
