Auto Insurance Claims: Flooded Lincoln, lincoln signature, lincoln dealer

Question
My 2006 Lincoln Signature series town car was in a flood caused by bay flooding on the New Jersey coast. The insurance adjuster want to have a mechanical shop repair the damage, i.e. wires,  harneses, starter, carpets etc. I think the car needs to be totaled. Any suggestions?

Answer
Hi Billy,

This is the usual tactic used by insurance companies. If the flood was fresh water it is not as bad as if it was salt water. However, you should demand that a complete electrical & mechanical diagnostic be performed and that the carpet all the way down to and including jute be replaced. The entire vehicle should be detailed and deodorized as well. I have no way of knowing how extensive the flooding was. You should be sure that the repairs are done at a Lincoln dealer where they will be more familiar with the potential problems you may face and will be more apt to want to please you than the insurance company. Regardless of what the insurance company may tell you, you have the right to have the repairs completed at the shop of YOUR choice.

I hope this helps
