Auto Insurance Claims: Pain and Suffering, negotiation process, pain and suffering

Question
I was involved in an auto accident in January.  My injuries required 9 visits to the doctor for over a month long period.  In addition to my actual expenses what would be an appropriate amount or percentage to add to my claim for pain and suffering?

Answer
Hi Heidi,
I am not an attorney.  My answer can not be considered legal advice, but simply a recommendation based on my past experiences of 47 years in the insurance industry and dealing with situations like yours by my own clients and people who ask similar questions on this board.
I have found that people who have recovered from minor injuries and have no long term issues usually demand an amount equal to at least 3.2 times their total 'actual expenses' as a starting point in the negotiation process with the adverse insurance company.
They are usually able to negotiate a settlement of 2.5 to 2.75 times their 'actual expenses' as total compensation for their expenses and pain and suffering.
I hope this information has been of help.
Your feedback by rating my answer will be appreciated.
