Auto Insurance Claims: Can my insurer deny my claim?, insurance coverage, dui

Question
A couple of days ago, the police pulled me over after a witness flagged them down - I freaked out and left an accident. I was issued a DUI as well as a hit and run ticket. My car didn't look bad and I was going to pay for repairs out of pocket until I found out a structural component of my car was damaged and, based on an estimate, I think they may decide to total it out. (I would actually prefer to have it fixed.) Can they refuse my claim because of these tickets?  My court date is several weeks away. I'm almost 50 and have a clean record and am contesting the charges. If I'm found at fault but not convicted will it effect my ability to get insurance beyond raising my rates?  Thank you for your opinion.

Answer
Hi Lois,

Unless there is a specific exclusion in your policy for damage caused while DUI, they will cover any damage to your vehicle as well as the other vehicles.

If you are no found guilty of DUI then it will not affect your insurance coverage. However leaving the scene is a major offence which may affect keeping your current insurance. You will be able to obtain coverage but at much higher rates.

I hope this helps
