Auto Insurance Claims: Unsettled Insurance claim from childhood, melissa smith, texas department of insurance

Question
QUESTION: A friend of mine was in a car accident in aprox. 1982. He was 9yo. He was awarded a settlement due him when he turned 18. He forgot about it and is unsure of what to do now. Where to go, call, or who to contact to get his settement. This occured in Abilene, TX.

ANSWER: Hi Melissa,

Your friend should ask his parents for the name of the insurance company. Contact the insurance company and start the process of settling the claim. Your friends parents should also have other details or paperwork or even the names of people they dealt with. His parents would have had to sign documents agreeing to settle the claim in this way.

Answer
Hi Melissa,

There is no registry anywhere that lists insurance settlements for people to find at some time in there life. Did his parents not have any paperwork or even the name of the insurance company?

The only other suggestion I can make is to start looking on missing money websites. Also each state has a missing money fund. When companies owe someone money and they are unable to find the person after a certain period of time, the companies are required to turn the money over to state.  You can try a website called www.missingmoney.com . Once there you can start a search by name.  If this does not turn anything up, your friend should call the Texas Department of Insurance. The may have a suggestion of what to do next.
