Auto Insurance Claims: change of ins. & reg., lease company, leasing company

Question
On A lease agreement, if the party's are unmarried the prime holder on the lease wants the co-signer to put insurance and registration in to co-signer;s name does she have to sign pappers for the transfer

Answer
Hi Jill,
In a case such as you mentioned, both parties would have to talk to the lease company and request that the lease be totally re-written into one name.  If the lease company agrees to such a change, both parties would have to sign documents with the lease company and the new lessee would have to would have to secure a new policy and provide a copy to the lease company.
Most leases are closed end 3-4 year leases, where at the end of the lease term you simply return the car and keys to the leasing company, pay for any excess miles driven as per conditions stated in the contract, and walk away.
I seriously doubt that the lease company would be willing to make any changes.  You both need to approach them and discuss the matter.
Sincerely,
Bennie
