Auto Insurance Claims: Decreased valuation of auto beyond repairs, diminished value, rule of thumb

Question
I have an 08 Armada that was severely damaged by an auto car wash.  Though the car wash assumed liability for the repairs to the car, I will also experience a loss in valuation because the vehicle's title is tainted.  Speaking with my dealer, the rule of thumb is that decreased valuation is equal to the repair bill, or $4000 in this instance.  How should I proceed?

Answer
Sean,
If the damage to your Armada was that major, I'm sure that the owner of the car wash will present the claim to his insurance company which will deal directly with you.
Discuss the matter of diminished value with them.  They will probably require you to hire a professional appraiser (at your expense) to determine the 'diminished value'.
As a general rule of thumb, the amount of diminished value will be 15% of the market value of your Armada.
