Auto Insurance Claims: diminished value, diminished value, accident repairs

Question
recently I was rear ended on an interstate highway and my 2010 truck was pushed into the truck in front of me.  The truck in front of my didn't sustain much damage and left the scene.  My truck received minor bumper damage on the front end but much more on to the rear end.  My tailgate has to be replace, rear bumper replaced and areas on both sides of my truck bed have to be repainted.  My truck was in great condition prior to this accident and I'm looking for some reasonable estimate of what I might ask for as diminished value.  I'm not looking to beat anyone up but do want something that's fair.  In a few years when i trade this truck in I know it'll cost me on my trade in.  is something between 15 and 25% reasonable to ask for?
Thanks,
Erick

Answer
I'd start by calling a few truck dealers and ask their opinion.  Let them know you'd appreciate their help and will keep them in mind next time you buy a truck.  Document names, dates, etc.  Also, check some online guides like NADA, Kelly, Edmunds, etc.  Most will allow you to put in information like prior accident repairs, and you can do it with/without the damage to see the difference.  If this does not help, I'd be thinking more like 10% of current retail value of the truck.

Insurers used to be pretty tough on DV claims, but the market has changed and we acknowledge them much more than we used to.  Carfax really changed things - because now it is easy to see if a vehicle was involved in an accident, and it definitely affects retail value.
