Auto Insurance Claims: Parking lot accident, parking lot accident, damage estimate

Question
Hello,
My car was hit by another driver in the parking lot of my school while I was inside of the building.  My car was legally parked, he turned wide and hit it.  The damage estimate is $906.  I filed a police report a few days after because the other driver would not give me his insurance information.  It actually took about 3 weeks to get more than his first name and phone number.  I called my insurance company (state farm) and explained the whole situation, and they said that it is my responsibility to file the claim with the other drivers company( AAA). Should my insurance company be calling them?  I am worried that I will mess something up because I really have no idea what I am doing.  Can you please just advise me on what to do when calling someone elses insurance company?  I just want to make sure that my car damage is paid for by the other driver and that I wont have to pay for it because it was 100% the other drivers fault.  Thanks in advance,
-Cortney

Answer
Your insurance company can file the claim for you as a courtesy.  Sometimes I do it for my policyholders and other times not.  It depends on how my day is going.  All you need to do since your car was parked and unoccupied is just tell the other carrier that exactly and there will be no dispute.  You cannot be at fault if you are not in your car even if it is illegally parked.  It is the other drivers responsibility to not hit parked objects no matter where they are.

Hopes this helps.  If not, let me know.
