Auto Insurance Claims: Auto insurance coverage, Auto insurance coverage

Question
Hi - I live in Iowa.  My 42 year old son does not live with me and lives in another town.  Currently I have a 1999 Jeep he has with him.  I have State Farm Insurance.  State Farm does not cover him since he does not live with me.  I pay $195/6 months for full coverage.  I am not sure how to make sure I am covered if he has an accident!!  If he takes out his own insurance policy does that mean I would be covered if he has an accident?? Any info is appreciated!

Answer
Hello Claudia,

If he has the vehicle, and he is 42, he needs to put insurance on the car. He is not a family member (I know, he is your son, but most auto policies defined a family member as a person living with you or a child in college). Right now, you are paying for an exclusion.

Have him get his own policy so he is covered.

Good Luck
