Auto Insurance Claims: Auto claim, claims advice, claim help

Question
I had a hail damage to my car and made claim. On the claim payment, I wanted to get a check for damage and choose my bodyshop. The insurance company will send me a check payable to myself and lien holder. They said I have to mail the check to my lien holder first and then the lien holder will send me the check. Is that how it supposed to work? Will the lien holder send check to me or the bodyshop? I am confused. My lien holder is Toyota.

Answer
 Hello Kevin,

This is a common practice.  Since your lienholder is part owner of your car, they want to make sure that you actually pay for the damages to their investment.

You are entitled to pick whatever body shop you choose.  You will have to check with your lienholder to see what their exact procedures are.  My guess is they will want the check to include the name of the bodyshop.  Call them and find out.

In my experience, this practice does not cause great delay to your repair process.  As long as you have a lienholder, you'll have to live with it.

Hope this helps.  Good luck!
