Auto Air Conditioning & Heater Repair: Honda Accord 2000 Air Conditioning problem, reputable shop, shooting from the hip

Question
1. One day last week  when I started my car in the morning my A/C would only blow on High - no air at all unless knob turned all the way to high.  The air was cold. At end of day - turned car on when leaving work it worked just like it should and was fine in 45 minute drive.
2.  Next morning - only blew on high again only this time the air was not cold.  End of day - again worked fine.
3. Next morning - still was fine - but took it to shop to see if they could figure out problem - reputable shop - but they said they looked and it all seemed fine and since it was working they did not know what if anything to replace.
4.  Worked fine next day.
5. Day after - only blowing high again and air was not cold.  Drove to an errand and then went to take it to repair shop and half way there it was fine again - blowing on all speeds and cold air again.  This was a different place and again they looked at it but could not determine what to fix since again it was fine.  Any help you can offer would be appreciated - if it was not so hot when it does not work it would almost be funny - trying to keep it "not working' in time to get the repair folks to look at it.

Answer
Holly,
Very temperamental car you have there. Maybe it is just scared to go to the "doctor"
This is the first time this fault has came my way... so I am shooting from the hip here. I definitely recommend you take it back to the shop... if you can get it there before it starts working again.
My first thought is the plug in the back of your control head, if it was loose or had a bad connection it would cause it to do all kinds of things out of the norm.

Second, I was looking at the schematic for your vehicle. There is a black and yellow wire that provides power from the ignition through a couple fuses to both your fan relay and your clutch coil relay. If there was a break or a short in this line that interrupts power it would cause something similar to what you are describing.

Thirdly... Ford put a new design in their systems for the escort (I know we are talking about a Honda) that would casue the compressor to disengage if your evaporator fan resistor block was bad. If your resistor block was bad, the only speed you would have on your fan would be high because the fan requires all 12 volts to work on high, it doesn't go through the resistor block. So If honda has something similar in their design... your blower motor resistor block (nounted on the evaporator fan) could have a loose connection in it.

Fourthly. All controls for your A/C are ran through your PCM. Power Control Module. If this is on the verge of going out, I could see it acting as described.

These are just some thoughts from a boggled mind. If you take it back to the shop, and it refuses to not work, first try and talk nicely to it, If it still refuses to act up... then ask them if they can test your PCM and resistor block. These are relatively quick checks, about an hour combined, and the next check would be trying to locate a short in the wire, and this can end up being a very lengthy process.

I hope this was of a little bit of help. Sorry I could not do more, but without the vehicle in front of me, there is only so much I can do. Thank you for the question and if I can be of any more help now or in he future, please do not hesitate to ask. Also, if you would not mine letting me know what they come up with, please do, that way I can file it away in my bank of knowledge and ideas.

If you found this respose at all helpful please remember to rate my answer. Thank you again.
