Auto body repair & detailing: acrylic enamel spot repairs, acrylic enamel, 55 chevy

Question
Hi, my buddy wants me touch up a few chips and blisters on his daily drver 55 chevy. It's two tone red and white painted in acrylic enamel.  I've done touch ups on a lot of bc/cc cars  and have pretty good results on those jobs, but a little concerned on this deal.  what would you recommend for this repair besides a total panel repaint?  I'm concerned about the red not matching as red is a real bitch to match up.  we are having our local paint shop blend the paint to match so I'm not worried about that It's the technique I should use. also could I use bc/cc to spot repair  the small areas over the enamel  any advise wil be appreciated.

Answer
Hi Frank,

Base/Clear over enamel isn't a good idea because the base/clear won't fade like the original enamel and in a couple of months the repair will show. For this repair it would be best to use enamel and reduce it till it's relatively thin and transparent and use several coats. This will keep the dry edge down and it will be much easier for you to buff out. Unfortunately for this to work correctly the color must be very close otherwise it will be noticeable. Hopefully your paint supply is either very good at matching color or very patient when it comes to tinting. Good luck with it.
