QUESTION: i am about to replace a damaged roof skin on a 1998 chev z71 x-cab,is it spot welds or panel adhesive that holds the original in place{i have been told both,by different people}If it is spot welds,what size spot weld bit will i need to drill them out??

ANSWER:  Both, A  5/16 spot weld cutter and an air chisel used very carefully. Once you clean up your edges, you will see the welds and you seams.

QUESTION: i assume the spot welds are in the door areas and in the windshield,back glass area and the panel adhesive is in the x-cab areas and on the structural supports

Yes, it's not to bad a job for someone with experience. You do not have to use panel adhesive. My gun cost over a hundred bucks and the kits are about 30 bucks. Spot weld your edges about 3 to 4 inches apart, use a heavy seam sealer on your roof bows and other inner contact points.
