Auto body repair & detailing: El Camino question..., impact absorber, gas shock

Question
Shawn:
I've got a 1979 El Camino...pretty decent shape for older truck.  But I had an accident the other day, and the front left part of the bumper (just as it curves to go around the edge) was pushed back slightly.  It looks like (underneath) that there are a couple of piston-looking things that are supporting the bumper, and I wondered if the one on that side was just pushed in a bit.
Anyhow...was hoping I could just run a rope around the bumper and hook up a come-along (ratchet pulley) to a nearby tree and straighten it back out.  I know it won't be spot on perfect, but would be satisfied just to get it close.
Does this sound like it would work, or is it a bumper much more complicated than that?  It's only pushed back maybe an inch and a half from the other side, and there's no crack or sharp bend in the chrome.
Any suggestions, advice greatly appreciated.
Warm regards,

Answer
If you're not concerned with it being perfect, you should be able to pull it back into shape. The gas shock (impact absorber) probably won't straighten if it's bent. If you need to you can put shims between the bumper & absorber to bring it out if the absorber is bent.
I hope this helps,
Shawn
