Auto body repair & detailing: Car paint job, car paint job, paint specifications

Question
Hello Brian,

the body of my car has some minor damages, and I am planning to have them repaired, plus I am going all the way, and have the whole body repainted too(the finish doesn't look good from weather exposure).  I am currently asking for quotations from a couple of local workshops, and I want to be able to understand the technical issues, in order to have a good deal right from the start, for example:  ¿What kind of paint specifications should I ask for?  If there are other issues, please advice.

Thanks,

Carlos

Answer
Tell the shop that is refinishing your car you want basecoat-clearcoat. It is shinier an longer lasting than one stage were they paint it with no clearcoat. Any good shop will use the verybest paint they have if you ask for it. You also want it in writing that the paint is warranteed for as long as you own your car. It is very expensive to have a car painted all over so get as many esimates as you can. If a shops estimate is way lower than the rest remember you get what you pay for.

                Hope this helps Good luck
