Auto Glass: stuck window - 1994 Probe, chris answer, motor noise

Question
QUESTION: I have a 1994 ford probe and the passenger side power door window is
stuck down & won't come up.the driver side works fine.I can't really
afford to replace a motor or any other repair right now,is there any way
to manually crank the window back up until I can afford a repair?if so,
how could I do this? Id really appreciate any advice, and its about to rain!
Please help! Chris.

ANSWER: Hello Chris,

The steps necessary to raise the window depend on what portion of the mechanism is at fault.  In general there are three likely causes:

1.  a bad motor

2.  a bad regulator

3.  a switch or electrical problem

Please answer the following questions and I will give you some additional information.

1.  Is the window completely down?

2.  Can you hear any motor noise when you activate the switch to move the window?

3.  Do you have an electrical test meter and know how to use it or have a friend that does?

4.  How do you rate your mechanical skills: great, good, average, or poor?

QUESTION: Well ben, the window is all the way down, you can hear no motor
noise, however the driver side still works, and you can hear that
one.unfortunately,I have no electrical test meter, and don't really know
who does......I'm not exceptionally mechanically inclined I wish I were,
but that's why imasking an expert as yourself......surely there has to be a
way I can manually crank the window up & leave it until I can have it
looked at isn't there??

Answer
Hello Chris,

In a nutshell the answer is NO.  Raising the window even without repairing it will require someone who has had significant experience working on power windows.

If you are lucky, the problem is an electrical problem.  If so, an experienced repair person will be able to activate the motor to raise the window using a remote power source.  This would be a fairly simple procedure that shouldn't take more than 1/2 to 3/4's of an hour.

If the problem is a failed motor or a broken window regulator then some disassembly of the mechanism will be required just to raise the window and block it into the "up" position until you decided to make a permanent repair.

Let me know if there is any other information that I can assist you with.
