Auto Glass: Power windows, pontiac g6, window button

Question
QUESTION: Dear Mr. Menard,

I have a 2007 Pontiac G6. My driver side window and back 2 windows have stopped working.  I think I may have had the back windows locked from the driver switch but I’m not 100% sure about that. The front passenger window still works from the switch at that door.

I checked the fuses and I replaced the main switch on the driver side door. Still no luck. What do you suggest I do next?

Thank you for your help.
Vicky

ANSWER: Hi Vicky,

I don't have any experience working on this particular vehicle yet, as most are still in warranty and are being repaired by someone other than me.

It is highly unlikely that three window motors or regulators on the same vehicle would fail in so short a time.  So, I suspect that the problem is electrical.  I don't have time to research your problem right now, but I will send you another comment as soon as I get a bit more information.

QUESTION: Thank you so much for your help. Does each window have a motor and regulator? Could it just be that the Drivers door is the one that is having the problem and because it was in the lock position for the back windows that is why the back windows are not working?

ANSWER: Hello Again Vicky,

Each door has a separate motor and regulator to move the window up and down.  As I stated previously, it is highly unlikely that you have all three going bad at the same time.

It would be helpful if I knew if the rear windows were just "locked out" by the window lock button on the master window switch.  Please get back to me with that information.

If the rear windows are working properly, I want you to try the following "experiment" on the driver door.

1.  Start the engine with the vehicle in PARK and the emergency brake ON.

2.  Sit in the driver seat with the door open.

3.  With your right hand depress and hold the driver door window button in the "down" position.

4.  With your left hand pull the door shut firmly and see if the window starts to work again.

I'll be waiting for the answer on the rear windows and the results of the "experiment".

QUESTION: I'm not sure if the back windows were "locked out" or not. The only thing I can think that may cause just the 3 not to work is that they were in the lock position. The back windows are not working at all. Should I still try the "experiment"?

I really thank you for all of your help.

Answer
Hi Again Vicky,

If the driver window and both rear windows do not work and the window lock button is not engaged, then I think the source of your problem is electrical so the "experiment" will not work.

Knowing that you have already replaced the master window switch I suspect your problem is in the "body control module" (car lingo for magic black box).  You will need to take this problem to someone with expertise in repairing vehicle electrical problems.  If you live in a large metropolitan area you will probably be able to find someone that specializes in this type of work.  If you live in a smaller town, I suggest you ask for recommendations from people you know, auto parts stores, etc.

Sorry I wasn't able to solve your problem.
