Auto Glass: Power Window, switch button, intermittent operation

Question
I have a 2000 Montana and the drivers side power window works intermittently. I had the switch replaced about 5 months ago. Sometime I have to press down or pull up on the window to get it to work but this doesn't work all of the time.

Answer
Hi Tom,

The typical failure of the window switch (goes down, but not up) on this vehicle is fairly common. So it is no surprise that you had to replace it.  I do doubt that the new switch is causing your "intermittent" operation problem now, but it's not impossible.  However, most switch problems are not intermittent, so let's look for another explanation.

Two things might explain your current problem:

1.  failing window motor.

2.  failing wiring.

The next time the window will not work, do the following:

A.   Start the engine with the vehicle in PARK
B.   Sit in the driver's seat and open the driver door
C.   With your right hand hold the switch button up or down
depending on the actual location of the glass
D.   Shut the door firmly while holding the switch button
E.   Repeat process one or two more times if window does not work

If the window works after holding the switch button and simultaneously shutting the door, it is very likely that the motor is starting to fail.

If you get no response to shutting the door while holding the switch button do the following.

A.   Open the door
B.   Turn the ignition switch to "Accessory"
C.   Hold the switch button up or down as before
D.   "Massage" the rubber tube between the hinges near the front of
    the door

If the wiring is starting to deteriorate this procedure sometimes temporarily closes the broken connection and provides a clue to what is wrong.

Let me know if you have any questions now.  Otherwise get back to me with the results when you have had a chance to check things out.

Good Luck, Ben  ..... the power window guy.
