Question
QUESTION: Hello, Mike Im thinking twice about my timing belt that I just put on the lft camshaft gear mark is dead nuts but the right camshaft gear looks to be slightly off another words where the mark is on the cam it lines up right on the groove next to the mark I want to try it but I feel a little leary what do you think Mike is it close enough in the groove?

ANSWER:      I don't know what engine you are working on but the marks should line up perfectly if you have the right belt.  Is the crank gear also lined up correctly?  Many belts nowadays come with marks on the belt as well as counting on the alignment of the pulleys or gears.  Without knowing which engine or which marks I really can't say for sure.  And you have to get right down in front of the engine and look at it straight on or you won't be seeing the marks the way they intended.

QUESTION: Sorry the car is a 1990 lexus ls400 and Im putting the same belt on this is the second time Im putting it on due to a o-ring that would leak coolant ...........

Answer
Well, I hope you get it straight.  I've never worked on a Lexus V8 so all I can do is wish you good luck.  That's one of the cars I was never tempted to buy 'cause the complexity scared me a little.  But they must be good cars, you never hear of them breaking down and the local dealer is so desperate for work he tells the owners that they have to come to him for tires.
