QUESTION: I am trying to find out what the part is called under the front of my car the fog light was hit and the plastic that is under that area has all broken off. There is a long piece of plastic and on either end there are two smaller pieces that are screwed to the larger piece,it is the smaller piece that has broke off and the larger piece is now hanging what is this called and can just the smaller piece be fixed.

Thanks

ANSWER:      This generally referred to as the front air dam or valance.  A new one is probably pretty pricey, but you may be able to find a used one if you look around.  Unfortunately, parking lot logs and curbs tend to be real tough on these things.  If you've still got all of the pieces they can be mended.  You need some special equipment and know-how but most body shops are equipped for this sort of thing nowadays.  If it's just the end piece that's damaged, you might be able to buy it by itself from a dealer at not too high a price.  Or not, BMW is not known for cheap replacement parts.

Answer
OK, then this is the piece that is fastened to the bottom of the core support (the bulkhead to which the radiator is mounted), right?  Sometimes it is referred to as a splash shield or apron, sometimes also as an air dam.  Its purpose is to create a negative pressure behind the radiator, forcing more of the under-car air up and through the core.  It enhances cooling and also reduces lift caused by air pressure under the front end.  These break all of the time; I'll bet if you looked under the next couple of three series Bimmers you come across at least one of them will have a broken one.  A new one shouldn't be too much as they are a frequently broken and often replace part.
