Auto Parts: Remove lock nut, cotter pin, mazda 626

Question
How do I remove a locknut on the steering wheel on a 1981 Mazda 626?

Answer
I can't say for sure, as I've never seen the steering wheel on a Mazda that old, but it shouldn't be hard.  There are three ways that a nut might be secured: a nylon locking insert (which will be plainly visible in a little raised portion on the top of the nut) which nut can simply be removed by using a big enough wrench, or a locking washer under the nut which will either be serrated (just use a big wrench, again) or flat with on or more side turned up against the flat of the nut (if this type is present you must use a small drift or the end of a screwdriver to bend the tab back down and free up the nut, which will probably still need a big wrench), or, lastly, it might be secured with a cotter pin or safety wire (to remove the nut, just remove the pin or wire first).
That said, every steering wheel I have come across has not had a locking nut but just a plain ordinary nut, albeit a large one.  The trick to getting the wheel off is not getting the nut loose, but pulling the wheel off of the shaft, which job will generally require the use of a steering wheel puller.  Some cars are different, I had to work on an Opel which required that I make a puller because the standard type of puller wouldn't work.
