Auto Parts: 1996 Oldsmobile 88 dimmer/multi-function switch, oldsmobile 88, pep boys

Question
QUESTION: After sitting all winter, I want to start this car and the battery was dead. When Hooked the batter charger up to it, the lights stayed on. No key in the ignition, etc. I have physically removed the light switch, and they still stay on. Is this possibly a dimmer/multi-function switch issue?

ANSWER: Hi Curt,

Which lights?

Looking for a reputable service technician? My advice on finding a good technician is: Steer clear of the dealership and 'chain' stores like Firestone, Sears, Pep Boys, Monro Muffler/Brake, Midas, etc. as they usually only employ ONE ASE Certified Tech just so they can say they do and chances are, that guy is the asst. manager or manager and is not in the store to diagnose/repair vehicles anyway. Find a service location in the link below or get some names out of the yellow-pages and do a drive-by. Garages that employ ASE Certified Technicians will be marked with the 'Blue-Seal' insignia. If unsure about whether a place employs Certified Techs, just ask to see their credentials. ALL ASE Certified Technicians will be PROUD to show and display their certificate(s).

Thanks for the question, I hope this information was helpful to you.

QUESTION: Sorry for the lack of information. It's the headlights that are in question. The ONLY way to get them to shut off is to disconnect the battery. As stated before, I even went as far as to remove the light switch completely.

Answer
Hi Curt,

That is weird.

The headlight circuit consists of the wire from the battery to the headlight breaker (usually included in the fuse or fuse/relay center), the breaker itself, sometimes mistaken for a relay, the headlight control or switch and dimmer which is usually last in line and actually controls the breaker.

My 'guess' would be that the breaker is stuck in the on position, which is very hard to believe or imagine or the dimmer switch is stuck in the open position which again, is weird because the dimmer in the open position would power both high and low beams at the same time. I'm not sure if that's what it's doing, but it would certainly be odd.

You stumped me Curt, and that's not a typical thing. I'm gonna do some research and see what I can come up with to help you. Send a follow-up or an email to me (fred@knucklebusters.us) and let me know what you've done or looked at so far. Include your VIN if possible.
