Auto Parts: 4L60E question, manual valve body, output shaft

Question
QUESTION: i have a 95 4l60e 4wd transmision. i would like to remove the transfer case and make it a 2wd transmission. i understand that the 4l60e has electronically controlled pressure and valve body, and i have taken care of the problem with a full manual valve body, and a vacuum controlled pressure regulator.  orriginally i had thought i could take the tailshaft off of the other side of the transfercase, and just move it forward,  but the bolt pattern is different. any advice? thanks

ANSWER: Hi Paul,

You can take a 2WD 4L60E and retrofit it as a 4WD edition by cutting the output shaft down but there is no way to extend the output shaft installed in your 4WD edition. You'd need to disassemble the entire transmission and install a 2WD output shaft/tail-housing. For that time and aggravation, just buy a 2WD transmission if that is what you want. There may be an adapter that does the same function, but that is only one more link to go bad sometime down the road.

Looking for a reputable service technician? My advice on finding a good technician is: Steer clear of the dealership and 'chain' stores like Firestone, Sears, Pep Boys, Monro Muffler/Brake, Midas, etc. as they usually only employ ONE ASE Certified Tech just so they can say they do and chances are, that guy is the asst. manager or manager and is not in the store to diagnose/repair vehicles anyway. Find a service location in the link below or get some names out of the yellow-pages and do a drive-by. Garages that employ ASE Certified Technicians will be marked with the 'Blue-Seal' insignia. If unsure about whether a place employs Certified Techs, just ask to see their credentials. ALL ASE Certified Technicians will be PROUD to show and display their certificate(s).

Thanks for the question, I hope this information was helpful to you.

QUESTION: thanks for the advice, but the transmission is set up for full out race, and to re-do another one would cost even more money and hasstle then taking this one apart again would. i have rebuilt many 700r4's, but no 4l60's besides this one, and i notice that they are basicly the same transmissions, besides the electronics(which have been completly by-passed anyways) originally i was making a drag-s10 blazer, with 4x4 to be able to do 4wd launches. but the truck got totalled by a family member before i could even haul it to the track. the transmission will now go into a pro-stree small block s10 that i had helped my cousin build. thanks for the advice though

Answer
Hi Paul,

Sorry dude but now you have me confused. You state you've remaned auto-transmissions before but can't understand why the T-case tail cone won't fit onto your 4L60E? A 4L60E (4T60E) is the newer model of the 4L60 (4T60) which was the newer model of the 700R4 which is the newer model of the THM350 (THM440) with OD.

A race 4WD trans? I think I'm done with this topic, good luck in your ventures.
