Auto Parts: 96 Land Rover Disco Rear Windows, rear doors, ground straps

Question
QUESTION: I recently replaced the front left window regulator. Put it all back together, window works fine. The next day I realize the rear windows stopped working all together . Switches are ok- I changed them around with the ft ones to test. Front windows work fine. I have not totally went into the rear to see if they are getting power at the motors or not yet . Just wondering if you have heard of this before

ANSWER: Hi Ian,

Most times the rear windows as well, all of the vehicle windows are controlled by the drivers, master window switch and if that switch goes bad, it will make the other windows operate erratically. Sometimes they'll work and sometimes they won't. If you are still able to work the windows with the master switch but are having issues with the individual door switches, I'd bet the master switch is going bad.

QUESTION: The Land Rover has 4 individual switches on the front console. one for each window. the front windows work. the rear do not work from any switch.

Answer
Hi Ian.

The rear switches receive power through the front switches. So ALL of the switches in the series have to be operable. If ONE is bad, it will cause the others to operate erratically.

Test the harness. Get a book that decodes the pin positions in the FRONT switches and jump the power inside the harness directly to the back windows and I'm thinking it will work. That is the only way to narrow down the single switch that is bad.

If that doesn't give you any results, check the ground straps on both rear doors, but it is extremely rare to have a ground on a door, let alone TWO doors go bad at the same time.

Thanks for the question, I hope this information was helpful to you.
