Auto Parts: Toyota 22r -re interchangeable parts?, frequent breakdowns, psi max

Question
My last truck had a 22r in it and my 86 4runner has the re.
I'm wondering if the starter and water pump are interchangeable and what else might be?
Would you happen to know how much pressure the engine pushes antifreeze through the rad?
I know that sounds like a weird one but I'm looking to put a shower on my rig and I'm thinking of going through the automatic transmission ports in the rad for heating.
What do you think?
Mike

Answer
Hi Mike,

Are both vehicles '86 or are ya just screwin' with me? I can't offer you interchange notes without specific year/make/model of the vehicle(s).

The engine doesn't 'push' any pressure into the radiator. The water pump is low-pressure, high-volume. The pressure in your radiator is produced by the quick-heating of the coolant. When it heats, it expands and since the cooling system is a closed system, it creates and holds pressure. The amount of pressure your system can support is determined by the size of the cap you have on the radiator. If you have an 8-lb. MAX cap, only eight pounds of pressure will be allowed to build before blowing off into the overflow reservoir and likewise, if you have a 19-lb. cap, it will build to nineteen pounds before blowing off. Most systems incorporate a cap between 12 and 16 PSI MAX.

Great idea using the trans cooler lines, but the trans-cooler part of your radiator probably holds less than 2-quarts of fluid. Unless you were driving down the road at 65mph with a big piece of cardboard blocking the radiator opening, the engine probably wouldn't produce enough usable heat to transfer fast enough into the shower-supply tube.

Electric or gas is always your best bet for making clean hot water in an RV. Idling an engine for the sole purpose of creating hot water is truly wasteful and the wear and tear of an excessively idling engine can play a toll later down the road with more frequent breakdowns as computers, fuel pumps, accessories and other mechanical and electrical items all have a finite lifespan. Do you want to waste that usable life parked, idling? Because you know that Murphy says it will meet it's end WHILE you're cruising down the road and always at the worst possible moment.

Thanks for the question, I hope this information was helpful to you.
