Auto Parts: Engine Light, egr system, auto part store

Question
I have toyota avalon 1997 & it has engine light on. Toyota service center recommend to replace following valves after diagnostic test.

1) EGR valve.
2) Vacuum Switching Valve (VSV)
3) Vacuum Duty Switching Valve (VSV duty)

I know about first EGR valve but not about second and third VSV valves. I couldn't found these valves from store. Can you please help me identifing these valves? Are there any other names being used for these valves at auto part store?

Thanks

Sanjay

Answer
Hi Sanjay,

OK I did some research and I found that your vehicle ahs an issue with the VSV in the EGR system, however when I search for the VSV for your vehicle, I can't even see where it has a VSV. Sometimes those diagnostic codes come up with errors on a range of parts to give you an idea of where to look, rather than breaking them down into individual codes-that would be way too complex. (Especially since diagnostic coding has been around for years-before computers were as high tech as they are)
I would start with replacing the EGR valve and see if that takes the check engine light away.
Is your car idling poorly? If it IS, then I would call your local Toyota dealer, or VISIT them would be better- and talk to the parts counter guys, they have software that breaks the engine down by bolts and they can locate that valve for you (if it is even in your EGR system) and can also order a replacement if necessary. This software is not readily available on the internet, that is why you must go to the dealer.

I'm sorry I couldn't help you anymore than this.
Good luck,
Christina
