Car Alarms: Jeep Grand Cherokee 1976 4.0, jeep grand cherokee, dash area

Question
QUESTION: hi, the battery went flat and I refitted it fully charged after about a week. The alarm started as I connected the battery leads and I disarmed it with the key fob but as I tightened the battery leads I heard something clicking close to the battery. Then the alarm started again and wouldn't disarm. When I pressed the keyfob buttons the doors locked and unlocked but the alarm still continued. I then started the engine and drove around the block hoping that the alarm would reset itself but it would sound for a few minutes, stop for a few seconds and then start all over again so had to park up and disconnect the battery again to stop the alarm

ANSWER: Well, not knowing what after market system we have
there makes this a bit tough, but generically speaking,
you'll need to set off the alarm for a few seconds.
Then, look under the dash area for a button or, a toggle
switch. When you locate it, turn on the ignition
key, press and hold in the button (little
spring loaded micro button, red or black possibly)
until the alarm chirps 1 time. This should over ride
the system, and only the keyless entry part,
if installed, would still be operating.
The LED (light emiting diode) light in the dash
should also go on solid.

At this point. the alarm would have reset.
If this had a starter kill relay installed,
it would now be opened, and the engine would
turn over when tried.

You would repeat these steps to go back to
user mode to see if this was corrected.

But if it does work, I'd keep it this way, and
replace the alarm asap with one you know and
understand how it operates for the best overall
experience.

Let me know if it works for yours.

QUESTION: hi, thanks for the fast response. It's the original factory OEM alarm system for a UK spec car.

ANSWER: Is there a siren on it?
The US version of this vehicle for 1976 does not
have an OEM/FACTORY system.

QUESTION: no it's the horn making the noise (on/off/on/off etc)

Answer
odd. Very early year for an OEM alarm.
So, ok then, the only thing to do here is to
see if it can be unplugged, and if so,
where is it and will affect anything else?

Hard from my vantage point, but if you can
locate a picture of the under dash cavity area around
the steering column, I may be able to ID it for
you.
