Car Alarms: car alarm, jeep grand cherokee, jeep grand cherokee limited

just brought a 2004 jeep grand cherokee limited 4.7 lt the alarm doesn't sound but the light on the dash does what it is supposed to as does the flashing indicators i also tried to set it off by locking myself in with the remote and then starting the car. can you help me
