Car Alarms: 2000 Subaru Forrester Car Alarm, subaru forrester, starter installation

Question
QUESTION: I just bought a used 2000 Subaru Forrester. When I changed out the battery today the alarm went off. I hit the lock but didn't know about doing any other pattern with the system. The guy at Walmart put a jump start on my car, I was able to start it but it refused to idle. I drove it to my sisters where it died and would not start again.

I've read the starter installation book and have attempted to disable the system using the program button. Unfortunately someone has messed with it and I was unable to get it to function.

Can you give me any advice on how to disable the darn thing?

Thank you, Vicki

ANSWER: It does'nt sound like the alarm. My guess is
the charging/alternator is going or gone.
I'd call a mechanic to inspect this because
the alarm would not start and have "idle" problems.

Let me know what you come up with, but look
at all the possibilities than just the alarm.

Welcome.

QUESTION: I very well could be that. The thing is the problem only started when I changed the battery, it was ideling and running just fine before that. However it is a new "old" car and could have the Alt problem too. Thanks, Vicki

Answer
Yeah, an alarm would not affect the "running" of the car.
A bad electrical system is'nt really related
to the age, even though yours is 7 years old.
Could be a simple. cheap fix, but have the
local mechanic look into it for you.

Good luck.
