Car Alarms: 1997 pontiac grand am, theft deterrent system, key cylinder

Question
i have not installed the key cylinder as of yet, this all was happening before everything was fine until we got the cylinder out, the people that were trying to help me banged on it some, and the release under the column seemed to be jammed or something.  a few days ago, i tried to install the new cylinder, but i couldn't get it to go in. i could get the car to turn over(using a screwdriver), but it still won't stay running because of the anti theft system. i am also thinking that something was broken off when the people "trying" to "help" started banging on things. when i would get the car started, a box with an arrow would come up on the panel. I am hoping this makes some difference, thanks for answering.

-----Question-----
i have a 97 grand am. the tumblers went out in the key cylinder.  i was at a department store when this happened.
the switch would turn like it would when you start the car but it would not catch.  i got down to the bare parts to knock the cylinder out(quick fix) but due to the anti theft deterrent system it wouldn't stay started.  i also had a person that thought they knew what they were doing and they decided to start banging on things which broke the release underneath the collumn.  i purchased a new cylinder got it keyed with the tumblers to match, but now the ignition switch is stuck in the on position.  i am not sure if there is something preventing it from turning back or what i need to do to get the cylinder in.  this is my only means of transportation to work and i have four kids(two are twins under two).  the lcd screen also does not work on the radio, i looked in the manual on how to turn of the security system, but have to match the code and since the lcd screen does not work i cannot match the code it is throwing out, plus i never got a code with the car.  i got information on how to reprogram it after i get the cylinder installed, but the installation is the problem for me right now and this shouldn't be a problem.  please we need any advice on how to solve this problem or what steps i should take to diagnose what could be the problem.

Wish I couldd help on this one,
but it's not the Passlock II system holding you up.
This is mechanical, not electrical at this point.

I'd contact another mechanic and have him/her repair
this ignition installation so the key does do mechanically,
what it's supposed to do, then you can discount that part of this project.

After that, follow the advice from GM on
reprograming it.

The ignition switch is incorrectly done
from the sounds of it.
Sorry, but "cart before the horse" here
I think.

Get that part done first.

Let me know what happens.

Answer
Wish I could offer some assistance, however it seems as if this truck needs to have the ignition cylinder, linkage, and switch replaced now.  The passlock I (not II) system is contained in this section as well.  More than likely whomever 'banged' on the switch broke this as well.  This really needs to go to a mechanic to have the entire system gone over.

Sorry.
