Question
I AM TRYING TO HOOK UP A SONY XPLOD 600 WATT AMPLIFIER AND TWO 12 INCH ORION KICKERS TO A 2002 FORD TAURUS. I AM HAVING DIFFICULTIES. CAN YOU JUST RUN ME THROUGH THE BASICS?

Answer
Hi Joseph,

Sorry about the long delay in answering this question.

The Taurus can be a little more difficult than some vehicles when it comes to installing an amplifier, because of the design of the factory audio system, and because of the difficulty in getting the power wire to the battery.

If you're still using the factory radio, you'll need to connect a line output converter (or the amplifier's high-level inputs) to the factory speaker wiring.  You can find all the speaker wires at the tuner/amp module, mounted on the back of the driver's-side wheel well in the trunk.  There aren't any speaker wires available at the back of the factory head unit, so there's no need to remove it from the dash.

The amplifier's power wire will need to be routed through the firewall to the battery.  Depending on the vehicle, you can usually find an empty rubber grommet either above the fuse box under the driver's side dash, or low in the center of the firewall in front of the center console area.  Neither grommet is very easy to get to, but with a bit of work you can remove the grommet, pierce it and run the wire through to get to the battery.  You'll need to be sure you carefully route and secure the wire away from hot or moving parts in the engine compartment.

If you're still having trouble, you can follow up with some more specific questions and I'll try to help you out.

Hope this helps!

Brian
