Car Stereos: MTX Thunder TS5512D, watts rms, mono amplifiers

Question
What would be the best amp for this MTX Thunder TS5512D enclosed subwoofer?

Answer
Hi Nick,

The subwoofer is rated for 600 watts RMS at 2 ohms, so it should work well with any mono amplifier rated for 300-600 watts RMS at 2 ohms.  There are many, many amps in this power range to choose from; there's not any one amplifier that will do a much better job than the others.  If you want to stick with an MTX amplifier, then the Thunder Elite 601D is probably the best match; however, there's no reason why an MTX amp would perform better than another brand.  One very popular amplifier that should work well with this sub would be Alpine's MRP-M500; these can be purchased from a lot of different sources, so you should be able to find a good price.

I'd suggest sticking with amplifiers that are "CEA-2006 Compliant"; this will help keep you from picking an amp with an inflated power rating.  Most mono amplifiers will have 4-ohm and 2-ohm power ratings; make sure you're looking at the 2-ohm rating; and don't pay attention to "peak" or "max" ratings--just look at the RMS number.  Again, just about any amp with a rating between 300 and 600 watts RMS should work fine with your sub.

Hope this helps!

Brian
