Car Stereos: building a system, inch subs, mono amps

Question
QUESTION: Hey brian i have a 94 mustang gt that im trying to build a system for. Im in Iraq right now and the only way for me to get information on products is to look them up online. Not real easy seeing as i dont understand much of it. Im trying to keep cost right around 1400, cheaper if at all possible. i want a deck that is dvd/cd/gps/bluetooth capable. Ive been looking at the Clarion vz400 and im trying to keep that brand name all the way around if at all possible. I need to know what kind of amp or amps im going to need to power 2 front speakers (6x8) 2 rear speakers (6x8) and two 10 inch subs. Mainly the confusion is in the amp.

ANSWER: Hi Shane,

I'm not very familiar with the Clarion unit, but it looks like it should do what you want.  Note that the GPS navigation is not built-in; you'd need to purchase the Clarion NP400 navigation unit to go along with the VZ400 if you want the GPS navigation feature.  The VZ400 does have a full set of front, rear and subwoofer pre-amp outputs, which is what you'd need for the type of multi-amp system you're looking for.

As far as the amplifiers are concerned, your best option is to purchase a 4-channel amp for the front and rear 6x8" speakers, and a mono amplifier for the two subs. Clarion has a couple different options available in each type.  In the current lineup, the XR2410 should be a good 4-channel amp for just about any set of 6x8" speakers you choose.  The choice of mono amps, though, will depend on just how much bass you're looking for from the subwoofer system.

Hope this helps!

Brian

QUESTION: Thank you brian i decided to go with the xr2410 for my front and rears pushing srq6831c speakers. Im not looking for a ton of bass just enough that it sounds real good.. So what do you think about 2 10" wf2510's pushed by the dpx1851? Also I decided to go with the clarion nz500 instead.

Answer
Hi Shane,

I think the DPX1851 is likely to be overkill for those subs.  If you combine the two WF2510's, you'll end up with a 2-ohm load at the amp; and you'll have 850 watts RMS divided between two 300-watt subs.

You could get away with using a pair of WF2510D's instead.  These have a dual voice coil design, so you could wire them so that they present a 4-ohm load to the amp; then you'd have a 460 watt output to divide instead of the 850 watt output.  You'd end up paying for power you're not using, though.  However, I don't see a lower Clarion amplifier model that could do as good a job with a pair of these subs.

You might want to consider getting a single WQ3010D subwoofer and pairing it with an APX1301 or XH2110 amplifier.  If you're not looking for a ton of bass, a good 12" subwoofer should give you all you need; and you'll save some trunk space.  You'll need to plan the box dimensions first, though; as I recall, a typical Mustang doesn't have a lot of vertical room in the trunk.  A single 12" box wouldn't require as much volume as a dual 10" box, but it would probably need to be taller.

Hope this helps!
