Car Stereos: 92 DeVille, Aftermarket Sound System, cadillac repair, radio facility

Question
Contemplating upgrading OEM sound system.  Noticed posts on Cadillac repair site regarding utmost care being necessary due to three different voltage levels passing through factory installed sound system.  Cna you comment on this. Thanks. I copied the post here: QUESTION: I have the 96 deville with northstar and I was told if I install an aftermarket stereo system (head unit, speakers, amp) that it will screw up a whole lot of stuff. I dont have the bose factory system with amp I just wanna add my own stuff and take the factory system out. If that is true that it will screw up alot of things do u know what I need in order not to screw up stuff with the aftermarket stereo that I want to put in...Any help would be greatly appreciated.

ANSWER: I am GLAD that you asked BEFORE screwing up the electronics.

Have a professional radio facility install the radio as there are 3 seperate voltage circuits that run thru the factory radio. 5, 12 and 16 volts.

If you even attach ONE wrong wire for 1/2 second you can blow the computers or the instrument cluster.

Answer
Thats a hell of an answer.

ive worked on devilles before and never did encounter with that situation, but even then there is ways to get around it, ive never heard of systems like that on older cars like yours, i know that on newer cars like chevy implemented some stuff into the radio, like door chimes and dome lights, so when u take the factory radio out you will loose those functions, but there are several companies that make modules, interfaces and special harnesses. But i would recommend u to take the car to a professional car audio store, and let them install it. if you re planning on doing it yourself go to the nearest car audio shop and buy yourself a wiring harness, an installation kit, and an antenna adapter if applicable, to your vehicle. that will simplify the process.

hope this helps.
