QuestionHi, I am a mechanical Engineer. Very much interested in all the mechanical work involved in building and tuning the race cars. How should I go for a career in this field. I will go for an MS in automobile engineering but need some first hand experience in this field first. I am already working as a service engineer in an automobile company.
AnswerOK, if you are SERIOUS, you probably should move to Mooresville, NC. This is where the bulk of the top NASCAR teams are located. Then be prepared to take a job sweeping floors or cleaning bathrooms. Many of the sport's great names got started in this way, and that kind of determination is what it takes.
If your interest leans more toward open-wheel race cars, then Indianapolis, IN is your destination. Entry level jobs are the same.
Your engineering background is a big plus, and the MS will be a great added asset. You should write a brief resume' detailing any previous experience, your educational background, and your willingness to work very HARD for your goals.
Racing at the pro level is extremely hard work. I recently had a friendly chat with Bob Tullius who headed the Triumph , then the Jaguar racing teams through the 80's. He spoke of 18 and 20 hour days and 7 day work weeks. Be prepared for that.
