Auto Racing: Roll Cage fabricater, central florida region, van steenberg

Question
Hi Dan,
I have been slowly prepping my '94 Miata for ITA/SM competition. I saw one of your answers regarding roll cages to contact Andy Watts. I need someone who is familiar with building Miata cages and I have been in contact with Mike @ ISC. Safety is obviously the most important concern, but money is also a factor. Does Andy still install the cages for ISC or does he operate independently? I am interested in any cost saving advantages.
Thanks, Mike

Answer
Hi Mike:

I have known RICKY Watts for 15 years and STILL can't get his first name right !!

Ricky and Lynne have moved upstate to Silver Springs.  Lynne's e-mail is LynARW@cfl.rr.com
(I hope that's current) The phone number is (352) 625 2540  Some times Rick can't get to the phone so leave a message, he will call back.

As far as safety goes, I have seen one of Rick's cages in an RX-7 land upside down from about 25 feet in the air. It was one of the most violent crashes I have seen in 25 years of racing. The driver had a bump on one leg and a scratch or two. The cage had moved about an inch. The car was way beyond a total loss.

I would have no hesitation with a cage from ISC and Mike Van Steenberg, Mike is a Mechanical Engineer and runs a great prep shop. I've seen a lot of his work over the years and it is superb.
The fact that Ricky did his cages for several years speaks very well of both of them.  I am sure that Ricky still takes any overflow.

Either one will provide you with a superb job, both are intimately familiar with the Miata, Ricky however, is a professional welder.  They are both very well qualified to do the job.

Lynne is the very first person I met in Central Florida Region SCCA 25 years ago, and for that reason, if I needed a cage, I'd take it to Ricky. If you want to call me sometime, maybe I can give you some more insight.
