BMW Repair: BMW, sears diehard batteries, bmw x5

Question
I have a 2002 BMW X5 -  where is the battery located and what is a good brand to replace existing battery

Answer
Mary, X5 battery is under the trunk area. Lift the cargo shelf. It is under the plastic cover, under the support strut, and under the air suspension assembly if equipped. The BMW battery has an external vent that plugs in the side of the battery and removes hydrogen gas created by the battery, While I recommend a BMW battery I also realize that BMW does not make batteries. BMW batteries are currently made by Exide. I like the Sears diehard batteries made by Johnson Controls. What ever battery you choose make sure it has the port for the battery vent like the original. You will have a DSC steering warning light on the dash if the car looses battery voltage. The car needs to see the steering wheel move from lock to lock and some road speed to remove the light, but the fault will still be stored. I recommend going to the dealer and have the fault memories cleared to avoid any confusion with future diagnosis and previous faults stored by the battery disconnection. This is confusing when performing diagnosis and may lead to a future incorrect diagnosis. Please fill out a survey if this helps.
