BMW Repair: Engine code 1397?, cause failure, o rings

Question
I have a engine light showing up as code 1397 and my code sheet does not show this one? 99' model 323I
VIN FP56112

Answer
Gary, the fault is for Camshaft postion sensor "B".
I am not sure which one "B" is but the old camshaft sensors have a stepped nose and are prone to develop microcracks and let oil into the sensor and cause failure. An updated style that has a square nose is now superceded the old style and I have never seen one of these units fail. I would replace both intake and exhaust camshaft positon sensors and the O-rings as the other sensor will fail in the future aswell.
