BMW Repair: 540i stalling and lunging, mass air flow meter, mass air flow

Question
I have a 2000 540i (I don't have the car here to check the VIN#) with sport
package, which has several frequent (and I
think related) problems.  The most common is when coming to a stop, the
revs appear to drop too low, and then jump up, causing the car to lunge
forward.  The second problem is intermittent stalling when coming to a stop.
This has happened 4 or 5 times, most notably yeasterday while turning a
corner at under 5mph.  It's quite startling to have the power steering all of a
sudden not be there while turning!  The final issue is an oscillation in the idle.
I can get the revs to bounce up and down by giving a little bit of gas while the
trans is in park.  I don't see a pattern due to temperature or driving
conditions, and they have been ongoing for about a year.  I get the lunging
problem every day, though the stalling has only happened a few times.  I've
had the car into my mechanic (not a dealer) and he
reports no fault codes have been logged on the computer , and of course,
didn't
experience the problems, and offered no answers.  The car only has 30k
miles, and aside from these throttle, idle, stalling problems, the car runs well.
Any clue as to what might be going on?  I've found descriptions on the  web
of others having theswe exact same problems, but nothing in terms of
solutions.  Thanks in advance for any help.  --Erik

Answer
Erik, The air mass meter (mass air flow) meter is most likely at fault. There should be a 7 year/70,000 miles warranty on this component. Also check intake manifold gaskets. You will need to go to the dealer and pay an hour and have them come to this diagnostic conclusion. Please fill out a follow up survey if this info helps you out.
