BMW Repair: Instrument cluster, gas gauge, dash lights


Question
1984 318i.I have no dash lights,gas gauge,speedo,turn signal indicators,idiot lights,but the tach & temp work. I`ve already removed all old stuff.Stereo,alarm,etc. I have a stock harness.As best as I can tell.Relay? Which one? There are so many.

 Although there is no 1 perfect answer to your problem, there are a few culprits for these symptoms.

 SI Board batteries are dead:  If you look between the guages, at the bottom you will see the service indicator (SI) lights.  This is the green, yellow and red lights that tell you when you need an oil change.  There are two batteries on a small circuit board, and they do go bad. Since this procedure has been written down previously, I'll save the time and give you the web site for this.

 There could also be a wire grounding out somewhere.  I have found that the wires running from the reverse back up light switch on the side of the transmission can either drop and rub on the driveshaft, or rub on the transmission tunnel causing the guages to stop working.  This isn't always the case, but it's possible.
