BMW Repair: 2001 BMW 325i engine shutdown randomly, air flow meters, mass air flow

Question
my 2001 325i engine randomly shuts down while on stop on a red light or stop sign.  this happen randomly, no pattern of occurance.  it occur about 8-10 so far.  but this still troubles me a little since it can be dangerous if it shuts down on the middle of the highway.  thanks in-advance.

Answer
Bill, Mass Airflow sensor and idle valves are usually the cause of these complaints. Idle valves also cause trouble starting. Mass air flow meters are expensive, but easy to replace or swap. Idle valves are cheaper, but harder to replace. If you have a buddy with a 3 series in a similar year swap him Air flow meters. Good Luck.
