BMW Repair: Oil level sensor, level sensors, oil level

Question
I have an E34 and E30 320i 1989 .Does the oil level sensor have any effect on the cars idling if it senses a low oil level in some way.
Is there a way to check the ECU via a special fuction in anyway.
Thank you
Ron

Answer
Ronald,
You should have M20 6-cylinders in both cars, and these have the oil level sensors in the oil pan.  If you look down the left side of the engine (under the intake manifold) you will see where the oil pan sticks out to one side, this sensor is mounted to the top, and has wires coming out.

The oil level (to my knowledge) should not have any affect on engine idle or performance.  However if your oil level gets low, it will cause the valvetrain to become loud and seems to make idle a little more rough.

Also NEVER, EVER use that oil level sensor to tell you when you are low on oil.  They malfunction all the time, and you could be out of oil, and the sensor tell you that you are full.  You should regularly check your dipstick for the level of the oil.

 Good luck,
 Josh
