BMW Repair: fault code 1286, octane booster, model bmw

Question
I just bought this 92 318i and everything is fine
except that occasionally the engine stalls under
load .There is no check engine light but i did a
test with ignition on and press gas 5 times and this
is what i get .it is supposed to be knock sensor test pulse , i have no idea what to look for.Right
now i'm using 87 octane , i do not know if that might be the cause but i will try 90+ when i do
my next fillup.i just wonder what are the possible causes and lastly how can i clear this fault code in the ECU?
Any help would be appreciated.

Answer
John,
I agree, if you are getting the knock sensor fault code,  you are not probably running enough octane in the fuel.  I would run 89 or 93 octane (depending on where you live), for a few tanks, and see if it clears up.  or you can buy some octane booster at an autoparts store and pour it in your tank just to see if it helps.

I think the later model BMW's have to run 89 or higher octane, but I'm not certain on that.  Check the owner's manual.

I dont think YOU can clear the fault codes, you will probably have to take it to a shop and have them plug in their electronic code reader to clear it.

 Good luck,
 Josh
