BMW Repair: Exhaust smell in car, e36, tail light

1996 318i. I have a smell in the car from the exhaust. It is burnt gas, but it smells like oil too. It is only there when I drive with the windows open.

 This is on the E36, but I have heard of these problems before.  I think I read somewhere that the tail light gaskets get leaky, and allow fumes to come inside the cabin.

 Also you could have an exhaust leak allowing fumes to come it as well.
