BMW Repair: 1992 318 iS starter problem, starter problem, 318is

Question
i have a 1992 318iS with 188 000km on it that i have owned for 5 years.  i am having a problem with the starter.  it will start when it is cold, no problem but after driving for 5 minutes, turning it off and trying to start it again, it wont even crank over.  i push start it, drive it home, leave it for a day, come back and it starts right up again.  any insight you can provide into this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Terry,
it sounds like your starter is suffering from "heat soak", as the engine warms, so does the starter.  Since metal expands when it heats, something in the starter is likely binding up.  I would take a hammer with me, and if it locked up, I would tap on the side of it while someone tries to start the engine.  It might break free, but I wouldn't count on it.

Best thing to do is just buy a new starter.
 Good luck Terry,
 Josh
