BMW Repair: 1986 735 - stalling on idle with clang, fuel pump relay, bmw service

Question
Yes, 380,000 kms. No books, just bought. Full service by well-respected BMW service.

They replaced Motronic relay & fuel pump relay as car was not starting very time (auto tranmission light not on). Now it starts very time.
They also suggested that the following repairs be done:
- replace brake pressure accumulator
- repair steering box loose on crossmember
- replace front shocks
- replace engine bay fuel lines

But this seems to be either an electrical problem or related to the gearbox.

Question -
My 1986 735 is stalling (or losing power at higher revs) when at idle. The Auto tranmission light will come on and sometimes there is a clang from the engine after which it often stalls (not always).
The frequency was at first intermittent but is becoming more frequent.
Alternator or gearbox? Or is it something else.
Answer -
are there alot of miles on the car? have you done the services?...check all the grounds

Answer
well what you have replaced probably has nothing to do with the problem at hand. The relays sounds like a quick easy fix but it hasn't repaired the problem.Knowing that it has a few miles on it I can hopefully send you in the right diredtion. There probably are more than one problem here.
I would pull the valve cover off and look at the timing chain guides for wear. The chain could be making the noise.I had a 7 towed in here for a similar problem. It was slack in the timing chain, the chain jumped and the motor was junk. When they jump(timing chain)the valves get bent.
So please check the chain as it may be this. This needs to be looked at.My 7 by the way has 390,000 miles on it.It was atound 249,00 when I had to replace the motor.
Let me know what you found
