BMW Repair: fuel system, coolant temp, car wont start

Question

Followup To Josh, sorry I thought I said it was the fuel sending unit. The car turns over but will not start thanks Phil
Question -
Hi I have a 1990 735il which had a leaking sending unit which I changed. Now the car wont start. Do I need to bleed the system? If so how? thanks Phil
Answer -
Phil,
I'm guessing you are talking about a coolant temp sending unit, and talking about bleeding the cooling system.
You SHOULD bleed the system, regardless of weather the car starts, although the car should be running to bleed the system.

There should be no correlation with changing a sending unit and/or bleeding the system, and your problem with the car not starting.

Seems like you either got coolant into the distributor cap and it wont allow the spark plugs to recieve their spark, or some other sensor is unplugged or malfunctioning.

Please be more specific about the starting problem.  Does the engine turn over, but wont start? Or when you turn the key do you only hear a Click and nothing happens?

I need more info before I can help
 Thanks
 Josh

Answer
Phil,
No problem, Sounds like your fuel pump is not getting power, or is jammed.

I would remove the pressure side hose from the fuel rail, and insert it into a bottle and have someone try to start the car.  If the pump is working, fuel will pour out of this fuel line.  You might have air in the line, and sometimes it takes a few minutes to get the air out.

Check all your fuel lines and electrical connectors to make sure that they are correct.  If you still dont see any fuel, check the pump, when you removed it, it could have broken a wire or connector that would normally sit in the tank.  Try to source the electrical problem.

 Hope this helps,
 Josh
